A warm spring day had me excitedly opening all the windows in home when I noticed a tear in one of the screens on the first floor. A closer look showed me that the screen had been purposely cut and the frame had been tampered with. Thankfully my house had not been robbed, but I couldn’t stop myself from questioning, “Did it happen while we were away? Was it during the day? And the worst thought, were my children here when a stranger tried to enter our home?”
I knew installing a security system was going to be my next capital improvement. What I didn’t know was that our new security system could do more than keep us feeling safe from unwanted intruders.
I am amazed by the versatility of our new security system installed by a local company. The options seem endless.
In addition to the standard window and door contacts and motion sensors, the latest technologies in home security now offer wireless contacts. You can alarm just about anything! A sensor on your sump pump will detect rising water if your pump fails. You can set the security system to notify you on your system key pad, or if you are away from home, set t to call you on your mobile phone. Cool! Perhaps you have a gun cabinet or, like me, a liquor cabinet. These wireless contacts are a great way to deter curious kids from exploring. Again, you can set the security system key pad to sound an alarm, leave you a message on the key pad, call the police, or call you directly if your protected cabinet is opened. All this is used to keep you and your valueables safe.
I have a DSC Power Security System. For the DIY individual, expandable installation kits are available. I was excited to learn that our home security system is considered a capital improvement (tax deductible). The security system can lower our home insurance rate and adds considerable value to our home. A sound investment for me.
Just remember, a safe home is a healthy home.
