All I Want For Christmas Is My Federal Tax Credit

February 1st, 2009

I’ve reached a point in my life where fluffy slippers and sweet smelling soaps do not top my Christmas wish list. This year, I’m asking Santa to skip the slippers. Instead, I’d like some fluffy insulation for my home.

This past October the federal government signed in to law the “Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.” This bill has extended tax credits for energy efficient home improvements such as windows, doors, roofs, insulation, HVAC, and non-solar water heaters. Tax credits for these residential products, which had expired at the end of 2007, will now be available for qualifying improvements made during 2009.
* For my insulation to qualify, its primary purpose must be to insulate
* The insulation must be expected to last 5 years OR have a 2-year warranty
* Installation costs are not included.
* Manufacturer’s Certification Statement required.
* For tax purposes, I have to save my receipt and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement.
* I will use IRS Form 5695
* The insulation must be “placed into service” or installed between Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2009.
If I meet all of these requirements, the tax credit will cover 10% of cost, up to $500.00, the maximum tax credit allowed for all improvements combined.
If energy saving home improvements tops your Christmas list too, read my blog, www.FixinChix.com for the latest information on all the eligible improvements and what you need to know to get your tax credit.
*Note: improvements made before January 1, 2009 will not qualify for the federal tax credit.
